There is a difference between retinol and retinoic acid. Retinoic acid, a drug, is not allowed during pregnancy.
Retinol, exists in our blood and is transferred from the liver to all required cells in our body, even during pregnancy.
The placenta is not permeable to all substances in the mother’s bloodstream.
Vitamin A/retinol, is absorbed throught the placenta in the form of it’s precursor, carotene.
Retinoic acid is absorbed on the surface of the placenta and therefore dangerous to the fetus.
